Prof. Dr. Lyudmyla Symochko is an ecologist and environmental microbiologist with extensive expertise in sustainable agriculture, microbial ecology, and environmental health. She earned her Master’s degree in Ecology and Environmental Protection in 2000, followed by a Doctorate in Ecology from the Institute of Agroecology and Environmental Management at the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences (NAAS) in Kyiv, Ukraine, in 2005. In 2008, she completed her habilitation in Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation at Uzhhorod National University. Currently, Dr. Symochko serves as an Invited Professor and Researcher at the University of Coimbra in Portugal. Her research is focused on advancing sustainability and food security in agricultural systems through a One Health approach. She specializes in investigating the role of emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals and antimicrobial agents, in informing the environmental resistome, with a particular focus on water and soil ecosystems within agroecological landscapes. Her work explores how these environments function as reservoirs and transmission pathways for antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, including opportunistic pathogens. Dr. Symochko conducts environmental surveillance and risk assessments to evaluate the implications of these contaminants on ecosystem integrity and public health. She is the author of over 200 scientific publications, including five books, and has made significant contributions to the fields of environmental microbiology, antibiotic resistance, and sustainable agriculture.
